Living Gaia e.V.

Founded in 2014, the Berlin-based non-profit organization Living Gaia works with the indigenous Huni Kuin in the state of Acre in the Brazilian Amazon.

Living Gaia pursues a holistic approach. The protection of the land and the empowerment of women are particular focuses. Together with our Brazilian and European partners, we created the 160 square kilometer protected area Tarayá in 2023, which serves to protect the forest, local biodiversity and the livelihoods of the Huni Kuin. Living Gaia also supports the Huni Kuin women in developing their organizational structures and their economic independence. In this context, the women's organization Ainbu Dayá was founded in 2022.

Other current projects include the construction of wells for clean drinking water, reforestation and implementation of agroforestry systems, the establishment of a women's community center, and measures to permanently protect the Indigenous territory, such as training local rangers and implementing technologies.

All projects are planned and implemented together with the Huni Kuin and local partner NGOs. In addition to the work on the ground, the association's other specific tasks include fundraising, raising awareness of Indigenous issues and cultural exchange through regular tours by Huni Kuin representatives in Europe.

Living Gaia is a member of the Transparency International and is committed to maximum efficiency in the use of donations. Running costs such as room rental, hardware and software are largely sponsored by Coaching Spirale GmbH, whose managing director Alexandra Schwarz-Schilling is the founder and chairwoman of the association. The association currently has one permanent employee, one part-time freelancer and two permanent volunteers.
